The West isn’t a place. It’s a feeling.
Dust in your throat,
sun in your eyes, and a Colt that weighs more than your sins.
Here are my personal top 5 Westerns, ranked by how many nights
I’ve spent replaying them
and how many GIFs I’ve carved from their frames. All on Dieulois.com/page_west.php.
1. Dances with Wolves (1990) – Kevin Costner
This is my soul Western. A soldier goes native,
learns the Lakota language, and finds home where he least expected. The buffalo hunt scene?
I made a 5s GIF of the herd thundering
still runs on repeat when I need peace. “The man who talks to the wind.”

2. The Magnificent Seven (1960) – John Sturges
Seven gunslingers. One village. Yul Brynner’s black hat, Steve McQueen’s smirk,
Eli Wallach’s gold teeth. The final shootout? Pure rhythm.
My GIF of the coffin ride into town?
Took me two days. Worth every pixel.

3. Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) – Sergio Leone
Leone’s masterpiece. Harmonica (Charles Bronson) vs. Frank (Henry Fonda).
That 10-minute opening? No dialogue, just wind and flies.
Ennio Morricone’s score is a character.
My GIF of the train arriving? I loop it when I code late.
4. Silverado (1985) – Lawrence Kasdan
The ultimate fun Western. Kevin Kline,
Scott Glenn, Kevin Costner, Danny Glover
all riding into town like it’s a party.
The saloon fight, the stampede, the final showdown.
My GIF of the four riders on the ridge? Pure joy.

5. Unforgiven (1992) & Pale Rider (1985) – Clint Eastwood (Tie)
I can’t choose. Unforgiven: Eastwood’s Will Munny, old, broken, drunk
but still deadly. “It’s a hell of a thing, killing a man.”
My GIF of the rain-soaked finale? Haunts me.
Pale Rider: Eastwood as the Preacher,
ghost with a gun. The axe scene?
Biblical. My GIF of the gold town burning?
I made it in one take.
They’re two sides of the same coin:
redemption and judgment.
